This is a good news and a bad news for the same time. I checked the Japanese news, all the report is the same that only the island of Okinoshima will be inscribed for its archaeological value and the name of the site will change to Okinoshima, island of god. If only Okinoshima island is WHS, so no woman will be allowed to visit this site similar to Greece's Mouth Athos! ICOMOS does not care about the issue of discrimination at all. This news also hurt feeling of locals who worship Okinoshima god islands as a single spirit that located in 3 holy shrines, seperating inscription of the holy sites with only one shrine is an unacceptable for locals, as ICOMOS seem to be not care on cultural or local belief. Also in my opinion it will effect economic and tourism opportunities, if only inaccessible Island is incribed, how they can make profit!

From the news, Japanese government is ready to fight with ICOMOS and will lobby WHC to inscribe at least two more shrines on another island and the one on mainland Kyushu which are accesible by public, by using cultural link that locals considered the 3 shrines are one entity of Okinoshima god. This will repeat the Fujisan case that the Japanese insist to add Miho No Matsubara, a small pine peninsular to be a part of WHS.

I agree. In this instance, ICOMOS is being willfully moronic.

Venetian Works of Defense was not guessed by anyone. Still 2/2/2.

I find it interesting that fortifications further afield in the former Republic of Venice were approved by ICOMOS, but there was no love for the fortifications in Venice itself.

Possibly the local authorities prefer not attracting even more tourists to Venice whereas all other sites want to attract tourists!

Is the USA going to resubmit the FLW buildings or is it going to just sit this year out?

The resubmission date for the FLW nomination is not known yet.

Qinghai Hoh Xil (China) Inscribe (?)

Somewhat unclear, but either a Referral or Inscription. There seems to be alot of confidence toward inscription, but there is mention of supplemental material sent to IUCN. Furthermore, some of the documents highlight that "official inscription" will allow China to finally overtake Italy as the nation with the most world heritage sites.

Primeval Beech Forests (extension)

Based on the report below (Poland), potential serious issues with this nomination. Seems like Deferral or Not Inscribe?

Based on linked article, only Poland withdrew its nomination (although it is still not clear to me and should be confirmed).

That seems rather premature for China to celebrate, since Italy still has two multi-national entries in the running this year: the Venetian Works of Defense and the (possibly troubled) Primeval Beech Forests extension. If only China had some quality primeval beech forests....
