It's unclear in general, but with the lack of other news items and the fact that it has only been on the T-list since last year, 2017 might be a stretch.

That makes sense. Great job with organizing the nominations and probable candidates. I am afraid 2017 may loose some of its most exceptional rumoured nominations Bagan, Babylon, and Sambor Prei Kuk.

Did you see any news for these previously mentioned candidates?

- Parque Nacional Los Alerces (PNLA) (Argentina)
- Paraty - Culture and Biodiversity (Brazil)
- Dirre Sheikh Hussein (Ethiopia)
- Holqa Sof Umar (Ethiopia)
- Zagorochoria: North Pindos National Park (Greece)
- Evolution of Temple Architecture Aihole-Badami- Pattadakal [Extension] (India)
- Cultural Landscape of Alamout (Iran)
- Bagan Archaeological Area and Monuments (Myanmar)
- Mafra Palace, Convent and Royal Hunting Grounds (Portugal)
- Bathyz Grassland Ecosystem (Turkmenistan)
- The Ancient Capitals of the Kingdom of Tonga (Tonga)
- Heart of Sharjah (UAE)

If you don't mind, can you re-post the updates (removing METZ) and any other additions/deletions?

Strasbourg is one of my favorite "provincial" cities in all of Europe, and perhaps my favorite Gothic cathedral, but I really do not get this extension. It also seems to overlap with the themes of the Metz nomination which focuses on the German district.

Strasbourg's 19th c. German district is not only relatively small - despite being architecturally quite nice - it's just not that unique. I don't know what I'm missing. What's the point? The whole Grande Ile is already inscribed. Is there threat of development or something?

Strasbourg extension

More information on Strasbourg extension including map (in French)

Actually I quite OK with the extension and that WHS should cover area beyond the Grand Ile, there are many nice buildings along the river on the opposite side of the island, but to cover all Neustadt, I am not sure as I never been to that area. Actually I really want the area to extend to the modern Gare Strasbourg, one of the most beautiful train station in France.

Don't get me wrong, I love the area and find it to be a beautiful area, with the "German Quarter" now Place de la Republique making a fine 19th square, with the especially interesting Palace of the Rhine. St. Paulskirche, St. Pierre la Jeune, and Strasbourg University are also very nice. There's a neo-renaissance complex I quite like, right off Place de la Republique, on the canal, that I believe is a girl's secondary school (Lycée Internationale de Pontonniers). This stuff is right up my alley.

As you say, Gare du Strasbourg is really impressive.

I am just curious as to why focus on extending the site to encompass an area that is comparable to many other European cities. Maybe I'm missing something. Perhaps extensions are not quite as difficult to put together as a full dossier for a new site and therefore its worth it to attempt to get the Neustadt inscribed. I would have no problem with its inscription.

Morocco may have submitted Casablanca for 2017. However, the dossier submitted has been rejected by UNESCO as incomplete. Thats at least is my interpretation of this article. "Postponed indefinitely".

And the two new sites and two extensions (all cultural and all passing as per Operational Guidelines) from Germany: Naumburg (you'd probably hang me for yes, another medieval site and with a previous dossier that was destroyed by ICOMOS, but I'd like it inscribed), the ice age cave art sites...with the extensions from the Bauhaus Sites to Bernau and the Luther Sites, that as I read in one of your reviews, is not a very strong selection of sites...maybe some, but not all.
I guess that after the disappointment from this year (with what happened to the Francke Buildings and Erzgebirge nominations) they all still very eager to get every possible inscription within a few years period.

Despite the notably missing nominations, 2017 still promises to be an interesting year.

1) First nomination from Eritrea and Angola, 2nd nominations from the UAE, Benin, Burkina Faso, and Moldova!

2) Cambodia's Sambor Prei Kuk is outstanding.

3) Taputapuatea would enrich the list, being a welcome addition to the already insribed Pacific heritage sites.

4) Will China equal or surpass Italy in insribed properties? For the first time this is possible.
