Hi, Els!

If you could also send me the Chemins de St Jacques document through Dropbox or other mean, I would be very grateful. I also tried to find it, vainly.

Korea has withdrawn the nomination of Korean Confucian academies, or seowon, for the UNESCO Cultural Heritage list! (after ICOMOS advised Deferral!)

"ICOMOS required us to do more research, such as explanation for the selection of the nine academies among some 400 academies in the country and comparing them with other Confucian academies in Japan and China," said Kim Ji-hong of the state-run CHA."

Selecting 9 representative sites is inherently complex when there are 400 examples. In addition, there seems to have been lacking elements in the comparative analysis. I will be interested to see articles in the coming days and months. Will the Confucian Academies take an earlier determined slot? For example, 2018 replacing the Buddhist Mountain Temples nomination (which is also a similarly complex nom)? I assumed success based on Korea recent record of inscriptions and my belief that the Seowon academies can demonstrate OUV.

Perhaps, CHA of Korea could follow the precedents set in Europe and nominate all 400! Realistically though, as far as preserved, authentic, and or protected Seowon Academies there are 74 Historic Seowon Academies that are afforded protection.

Some additional info is expanded upon in the Korea times article.

Korea has withdrawn the nomination

Now Korea, Japan, Thailand or even India withdraw its cultural sites nomination, so this year China will be the only country in the Far East to nominate cultural site to WHC! (except Japanese transnational Le Corbusier). Not a good year for Asian cultural site, hope the natural sites will get a better result.

CHA of Korea could follow the precedents set in Europe and nominate all 400!

And we will get extension from China, Japan, N Korea, Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore etc. UNESCO will be pleased. LOL
