Assif:
Does anyone know what has become of the following sites that were reported to candidate in 2014? Have they been postponed to 2015?
Svalbard (Norway)

For Svalbard to be considered in 2014, the nomination papers would have had to be submitted by 1 Feb 2013 - but in Dec 2012 there was a report of opposition/concern about the nomination in relation to future oil exploration and the exact provisions of the Svalbard Treaty. So it would appear that the nomination is "on hold" whilst this matter is "sorted out"! But, given that Norway is unlikely to give up fully its oil rights in the area, the only way of sorting it out would seem to be that the nomination should allow for some aspects/areas of oil exploration in future which in turn would require a degree of compromise from IUCN/UNESCO on the "half a loaf is better than none" basis. But would they ever take this view?? With this issue around, 2015 doesn't appear likely .... or ever???

See this article and particularly this section (via Google Translate) indicating the differing views of government departments in Norway!
" Government is treading carefully, after the Ministry of Environment and SV managed to push through that Svalbard should be investigated for World Heritage status is forced to make a choice of routes.... Petroleum and Energy (MPE) has asked the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate (NPD) consider Svalbard in connection with the oil industry"
http://www.tu.no/olje-gass/2012/12/06/vurderer-oljeaktivitet-pa-svalbard

There is also this similarly dated article from the Norwegain internet news service "Barents Observer" -
http://barentsobserver.com/en/arctic/2012/12/norway-considers-unesco-protection-svalb ard-10-12

The 2014 target goes right back to 2009 and not many nominations manage to maintain their planned dates over such a period - see my review of Svalbard for what was being said then http://www.worldheritagesite.org/sites/t5161.html

Re Mardin for 2014
I have just discovered that the "History" of this T List site we have recorded on the Web site is incomplete (Worth updating Els??) . In fact Turkey nominated it for consideration in 2003 but ICOMOS recommended "rejection" and Turkey withdrew it before the WHC. See page 103 of http://whc.unesco.org/archive/2003/whc03-27com-inf08ae.pdf
The evaluation was pretty damning
"Regrettably, the integrity of the town as whole is severely compromised as a result of adverse developments. From the conservation point of view, it is justified to treat the
historic town of Mardin as a whole. From the point of view of World Heritage, however, the whole cannot be considered to meet the requirements of outstanding universal value."

but did leave a slight hope if the nomination were to be revamped and retargeted -
"The issue of Mardin being the homeland of the ancient Syria-Aramaean culture and how this is expressed in the ancient site has not been clearly elaborated in the nomination dossier. Even though there is a brief description of their main monastery, Deyru'l Zafaran, this is 5 km outside the town and has not been included in the nominated area "
It would seem that Turkey will have had problems overcoming the earlier weaknesses -which may explain its slippage from 2014

I apologize if this has already been asked or if it is common knowledge, but have the dates and location for the 2014 World Heritage Committee been set yet?

Groupe de Sambor Prei Kuk (1992)

oh I have been waiting for this one to turn up. It was pretty well advanced when I visited in 2010, they were even aiming for 2012.

It is a rather wonderful site and the people working there were very kind, i hope they get some reward for it.

It looks as if Australia is going to figure in some potentially controversial discussions at the upcoming 2014 WHC

a. Apparently it is going to request the WHC to de-list "74,000 hectares of the wilderness and rainforest for which Tasmania is internationally renowned." Requests for removal of significant areas from existing inscriptions are not normally well received as I remember it. They obviously raise the question as to whether the OUV still remains if the original inscription "required" these areas to gain inscription! (Fuller details already provided by Els in a news link - http://news.mongabay.com/2014/0203-hance-tasmania-unesco.html )
b. The Great Barrier Reef is up for consideration as being "in danger". I see that Australia has recently submitted a "State of Conservation Report" (http://whc.unesco.org/download.cfm?id_document=127128 ) in response to last year's WHC which "Considers that the above-mentioned issues represent a potential danger to the OUV of the property"

It is "unfortunate" to say the least for both issues to arise at the same WHC!

India finally has decided to nominate Rani-ki-Vav for decision in 2014, and to re-submit the Great Himalayan National Park after referral in 2013.

I'm thinking that the Blue Mountains is also going to come under some scrutiny if Sydney's second airport is approved.

Seem that ICOMOS is really unhappy with the new viaduct of Panana City, and recommends to delete the historic center and keeps only Panama Viejo as WHS!
