I haven't been as active in these votes as I would like (busy time off-line) and seem to have got the wrong end of the stick when diving in. And I don't want to muddy the waters with this one now it is being rounded up, but I just wanted to flag up the lack of Syracuse in this category.

It is one of the best sites I have visited that exemplifies urban continuity. Founded by Phoenician's and adapted by pretty much every Mediterranean power since. The Cathedral alone has very evidently been used as a Greek Temple, Roman Temple, Byzantine basilica, Norman church, Mosque before being converted to its current guise as a Baroque cathedral. I don't think I have ever visited anywhere where so many influences are on display.

At the moment we have it under Archaeological Site: Roman, which doesn't seem to reflect the OUV of the site, there are Roman archaeological remains, but they aren't the most significant ruins in the city. So I'm not sure quite where to flag this up without being awkward.

But just to say I think the bold sites are correct from my view, though I would add Syracuse to it.

Even I don't want to muddy the waters. I agree with the list. So, I will vote for the sites already in selected list to make the case stronger.

My selection (excluding already selected sites like mexico, Paris, vienna )

Istanbul
Jerusalem
Rome
Venice
Damascus
Prague
Sana'a

You bring up a good point about Syracuse. I'd be more than happy to provide a second vote in favor of Syracuse to move it onto the maybe list as an example of a Mediterranean city with Greek, Roman, Byzantine, and Baroque roots. It may also be worth bringing up Syracuse in the "Category Doubts" thread for discussion about future placement.
