I think it would be more rewarding for fr4nc1sc4 to explain his/her choices for those sites and see whether these explanations bring him/her support from other members. If any of these sites get supported by additional members I will take them out of the list. Does this seem ok to everyone?

I agree with this. If we agree with the logic, then we will support them. Lets wait whether we get some other members who add their vote.

And it is not just the sites proposed by fr4nc1sc4 to highlight, if there are proposals that are outliers in the general trend, then a justification would be useful. It may well be convincing and highlight a very worthwhile candidate that isn't considered due to lack of knowledge on the part of the rest of the community.

The question is how to proceed.
Does this seem ok to everyone?

There are some sites recommended by you, me as well as some other members are also out of the race. Lets see whether any of these sites get second vote or not (those who have not voted yet). We can also second them if we found the logic (if forwarded ) is interesting.

I have just updated the list above to include all sites which got 0-1 votes. If someone wants his/her site saved they should get a second vote. I shall then remove the site from this list as I have already done in such cases (e.g., Villa d'Este, Pitons de Reunion).

Sites I would be happy to save:

Costiera Amalfitana - visually beautiful
Konso - for their rich folk traditions and vernacular architecture
Orkhon - Ghinges Khan
Richtersveld - Great example of current nomadic lifestyle

Both the religious categories still are not properly discussed.

I'd save Orkhon too as well as Hildesheim, Omo valley, Pyrenees, Reims. Should these sites not be 'saved' would it mean that it would be impossible to vote for them or in the end there will still be a free vote from the 1031 ???

I keep updating the list, so if there are two in favour of one of the sites in the following discussion it will be erased here.

We said the final vote would be from a shortened list so the first is right - if a site does not get the support of at least two members it is taken out of the shortlist and there will be no possibility to vote for it at the end.

Remember some of us are away and haven't been able to contribute - especially when there are pages of contributions without reasons!!!

No problem. The list can be changed at any time if there is enough support for one of the sites.

I believe Bwindi has at least two votes in the fauna category, from kkanekhan and me. Is the Bwindi on your list above based on the flora category?

I am not sure how we got into "voting" quite this early in the process.
As I understand it the top 200 will be about voting (question as to what one is voting on yet to be decided)
But this 400 list is supposed is it not to be about as near "objective" criteria as our small group can achieve.
OK we may have to vote to decide on a few disputed sites at the end of the day but we should surely avoid this as much as possible.
I just cannot in all honesty see how some of the sites which have been suggested could possibly be objectively regarded as being top 400 material - and certainly not when no reasons have been given.
That is not to say that they could not perfectly reasonably be among someone's top 200 personal sites ( or even their most favourite site of all!!). But is the fact that one had a particularly satisfying personal, religious or other experience at site X (or has, for intance, an all consuming interest in and knowledge of, say, lacustrine environments) of general value?
I had hoped that this exercise would enhance my knowledge of sites ( and in some cases it has!!) I would be very interested to hear why (eg) Ferto should be considered (and i might change my mind as a result of receiving such info), but until a reason is put toward which can survive some assessment by the rest of us I don't think we should take such a site forward.
An " interest" from the second vote may well be to see to what extent individual preferences coincide with the "objective" list and to what extent they are informed by nationalism, special interests etc etc - but, at the moment let us try to identify and use non personal criteria as far as is humanly possible!
