I found the World Heritage Tentative List candidate that local government submitted to central government to consider, very interesting.1) Pit dwelling remains of Eastern Hokkaido2) Saitama Tombs - end point of the ancient East Asia tumulus culture 3) Matsushima Bay4) Toyama Takaoka cultural heritage group5) Castle Town of Kanazawa and Mt Hakusan6) Nagano's Zenkoji Temple7) Matsumoto Castle8) Tsumago and Magome, towns along Nakasendo Trail9) Hida Takayama Old Town10) Kintaikyo Bridge11) Oouchi Culture of Yamaguchi12) Mito clan academic and educational heritage group13) Ashikaga school and Ashikaga's heritage14) Early modern Okayama cultural and civil heritage group 15) Ashio Copper Mine, Nikko16) Japan silk industry modernization heritage in Nagano17) Tateyama - Kurabo18) Amanohashidate19) Mount Aso20) Cultural Landscape of the Mogami 21) Cultural Landscape of Wakasa, Fukui22) Mitokusan - faith of the mountain and cultural landscape23) Shikoku Pilgrimage Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage road 24) Usa, Kunisaki - original landscape of gods syncretism25) Taketomi Island cultural landscape

From more than 25 nominations, Japanese Cultural Affairs Agency approved these four sites to prepare document and submit to UNESCO as new tentative list

1. Mogami River Cultural Landscape - ship transportation and water agriculture and prayer fostered, fertile earth (Yamagata Prefecture)
2. Amanohashidate - the origin of the Japanese cultural landscape (Kyoto)

4. Shikoku Pilgrimage Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Road (Tokushima, Kochi, Ehime, Kagawa Prefecture)
5. Aso - in harmony with the cultural landscape of the volcano (Kumamoto Prefecture)

The report also recommend to combine Japanese castle towns of Kanazawa, Hagi and Matsumoto to be single nomination and better OUV.

The agency also approved these potential sites but need further study:

- Zenkoji Metropolitan temple town (Nagano Prefecture)
- Academic and educational heritage group of Mito clan (Ibaraki Prefecture)
- Ashikaga school and Ashikaga's heritage (Tochigi Prefecture)
- Early modern Okayama cultural and civil heritage group (Okayama Prefecture)
- tsumago-juku, Magome inn and Nakasendo (Nagano, Gifu Prefecture)

Japanese Castles and WHS nomination

Found an interesting article about the plan to nominate other Japanese Castles to be WHS as an extension of Himeji. It is understandable that it is impossible to register other Japanese Castles to be WHS as it is very hard to show OUV which already represented by Himeji Castle.

Before 2015 there were 4 castles that classified as "National Treasure", Himeji, Hikone, Matsumoto and Inuyama. The city of Matsumoto and Inuyama want an idea of serial sites nomination as Himeji extension, but did not get any support from Himeji and Hikone.

Hikone is pursuing to register its castle as cultural landscape of Lake Biwa and believe its castle complex is different enough from Himeji to show OUV by itself which is questionable from many cultural experts.

In 2015 Japanese government promoted Matsue Castle as another "National Treasure" and Matsue also want to be WHS and join Matsumoto and Inuyama to promote idea of serial site nomination.

If Hikone does not join the group, it will become a problem to demonstrate OUV for other three castles. In short .. provincial rivalry..

5. Aso - in harmony with the cultural landscape of the volcano (Kumamoto Prefecture)

Several structures of the Aso Shrine have just collapsed during the recent earthquake.

"The Aso Shrine was heavily damaged in the 2016 Kumamoto earthquakes. The shrine's rōmon (tower gate) completely collapsed. The haiden (worshiping hall) also collapsed." -wiki

After got bad report from ICOMOS 3 years ago on authenticity issues that many of Kamakura historical sites are reconstructed or newly built during Edo Period. Kamakura is refocusing its heritage value instead of focus only on Kamakura Period but to expand from Kamakura to Modern history in order to be listed as WHS.

The current plan include Kamakura, pilgrimage site of Oyama and Naval Port in Yokosuka.

Japan will choose 2018 cultural WH site nomination in July. The 4 choices are still Nagasaki Churches, Jomon Sites of Hokkaido and Tohoku, Osaka's great tumuli and Niigata Sado Gold Mine.

Based on old and more recent reports, Japan's nomination for 2018 should be announced on Monday.

There goes another 10% of UNESCO's budget. Japan withholds dues. Considering the recent actions taken by Israel, the budget of UNESCO could be the most precarious its ever been! co/2016/10/14/514b2936-91da-11e6-bc00-1a9756d4111b_story.html

United States

I think US funding may comes back the first months of a Hilary Clinton administration. A new president can normally get their agenda through the first 6 months.

I think US funding may comes back the first months of a Hilary Clinton administration. A new president can normally get their agenda through the first 6 months.

You may know more about it than I do, but I was under the impression that there was legislation in place that prevented the US from giving money to any organization that recognizes Palestine. If the House and the Senate go democrat, they could maybe overturn it? But that seems unlikely. And there are those sovereignty wing nuts (not a large group, but vocal when roused) who come out anytime UNESCO is mentioned to say that the US is giving away its monuments...
