It was later a residential complex (vecindad), but later became a hotel again. In 1948, it hosted Simone de Beauvoir. At Avenida Hidalgo 85. • Hotel Gillow: opened 1876, on the site of a house for spiritual exercises by Jesuit friars. Was reinaugurated by president Porfirio Díaz in 1910. At Isabel la Católica 17. • Hotel Principal: opened 1906, on the site of a former house. At Bolívar 29. • Hotel Ritz: opened 1930. Among others, it hosted Errol Flynn, Leopold Stokowski and the Mexican jet set and was usually visited by intellectuals as José Clemente Orozco and Octavio Paz. | |

| Paseo del Prado and Buen Retiro | The Ritz and Westin Palace were the very first hotels in Madrid. The Westin was built in 1912 at the former site of the palace of the Duke and Duchess of Medinaceli, and decorated in the same style as the grand Parisian buildings of the Belle Époque, it was, at the time, the largest and most luxurious hotel in Europe. It deserves a visit if only for its amazing stained glass dome. The Ritz (1910) was designed by French architect Charles Mewes and Spanish architect Luis de Landecho. It became one of the first in Madrid to use reinforced concrete in its construction. The most famous Spanish and foreign companies of the time contributed to the decoration of its rooms. Carpets were woven to order at Spain's Royal Tapestry Factory, linens were commissioned from Ireland and crockery and cutlery arrived from England. | |
