Flemish Béguinages

Flemish Béguinages

One of the things I love about World Heritage Sites is how they can expose you to places, or in the case of the Flemish Béguinages, concepts, that I had not known before. History tends to be rather male-focused, and while I was aware women often had limited options in life in medieval times (with marriage or religious orders being some of the more common choices), I had never learned about the béguinages in northern Europe. These religious societies offered single women an option to live together in a community while retaining independence to come and go at will. When I visited the city of Bruges last August, I made sure to stop by the Begijnhof, tucked away in a quiet corner of the city

Camino Real

Camino Real

I first traveled Mexico's Royal Road, the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro, in 1998 as part of a church mission trip which took me from El Paso by road to Durango. It's a shame I wasn't particularly aware of the significance of the route at the time, and I didn't pay much attention to the historic center of Durango. I corrected this oversight on a visit to Mexico City almost 20 years later in January 2017. I wasn't content to count the Zócalo as the only representation of this World Heritage Site, which includes 60 different sites related to the historic road, so I took a day trip out to Tepotzotlán, a small, charming city just north of the capital

Works of Antoni Gaudí

Works of Antoni Gaudí

Barcelona is home to two World Heritage Sites dedicated to architecture, but for most visitors only one of these will come to mind: the Works of Antoni Gaudí. This World Heritage Site only comprised three of Gaudí's works when first inscribed: Parque Güell, Palacio Güell, and Casa Mila. My friend and I rented go-karts to travel Barcelona when we visited in 2013, and we made a point to spend time exploring Parque Güell, which seems a bit like Lewis Carroll's Wonderland turned into stone and mosaics. As many have noted, the park offers a superb view of the city, although Barcelona is not lacking in overlooks

Speyer Cathedral

Jay T USA - 14-Apr-19

Speyer Cathedral

A church spire stands over the city upon exiting the Speyer train station, but it isn't part of the Speyer Cathedral. Instead, one has to walk just under one kilometer south down Bahnhofstrasse to Maximilianstrasse in order to see the Romanesque cathedral anchoring the east end of the street. The cathedral was begun almost 1,000 years ago, and is quite remarkable both near and far away. Sadly, I visited at the end of March this year, so the towers were not yet open for tours. Additionally, minor work was under way at the front entrance, which required an entrance from the side of the church. I had the cathedral almost all to myself (with just the cleaning crew) since I arrived just after it opened at 0900

Plantin-Moretus Museum

Plantin-Moretus Museum

The United States celebrates National Library Week each April, but libraries in the US and around the world would be in poor shape were it not for publishing houses and the printed word; hence, the Plantin-Moretus Museum in Antwerp, Belgium, finds its place on the World Heritage Site list. I had high expectations for the museum when I visited last August, and the audio tour I took easily met those expectations. The Plantin-Moretus Museum showcases a 16th century publishing house run as a family business
