Thessalonika

Assif Germany - 05-Aug-18

I only had half a day to visit the inscribed sites in Thessaloniki so I had had to plan my visit in detail. First I picked the churches I wanted to visit most (7 out of 14) and planned a route which went through them. They are all not far from each other and the route can be perfectly done by foot. The problem is finding out the opening times. From the ones I wanted to visit (Rotunda, Acheiropoietos, Hagia Sophia, Panagia Chalkeon, Hagios Demetrios, Hosios David and Nikloaus Orfanos) only the Rotunda now serves as a museum. All the others are functioning churches and it is practically impossible to find out whether they are open to visitors or not before you head there unless you can call them before and talk to the priests in Greek. I was lucky though

Brú na Bóinne

Assif Germany - 24-Jun-17

When visiting the complex of Bru na Boinne xI was impressed how well preserved the site was. It was not something I had expected from a site that old. I also learnt some interesting facts regarding the sites that are not normally mentioned:

1) The complex is the second largest concentration of neolithic art in the world (after the WHS Neolithic Orkney). As most of the art is presented on large stone slabs it is dubbed the largest concentration of megalithic art in the world.

2) One of the carvings presents a whale. I couldn't find any information as to whether whales lived in Europe at the time the site was built.

Architecture Moderne du XX siècle de la Ville de Montevideo (T)

Assif Germany - 29-Mar-16

I found it extremely difficult to find out what is exactly meant to be included in this proposed nomination: the most obvious candidates - the Art Deco ensemble in the city centre for which Montevideo is known do not seem to be included. The only building explicitly mentioned in the description is the Hostpital de Clinicas, which is a rationalist concrete monster from the 50ies. Residences surrounding the Park Batllo y Ordonez are mentioned without naming the specific buildings. Perhaps the nearby Estadio Centenario (Centennial Stadium) with its rationalist viewing tower from the 30ies would be included too.

Palace Cave (T)

Assif Germany - 29-Mar-16

The Palace Cave is a small cave with an exceptional formation looking like an open structure with multiple pillars. It is located about two and a half hours drive away from Montevideo in the vicinity of Chamanga TWHS. It is possible to visit on the way to Fray Bentos. After it got rejected as a WHS it successfully applied as a Unesco Geopark which also encompasses nearby Chamanga. When I was there I asked if this means Chamanga too is no longer aspiring an inscription, but I was told it still does. The Palace Cave can only be visited in a guided tour. The tour leaves the visitor centre frequently and is very cheap. You then walk to the cave where you are given some time to play around its cavities. It is a nice visit if in the area, but I believe I can see why its rejection was justified.

L'oeuvre de l'ingénieur Eladio Dieste (T)

Assif Germany - 22-Mar-16

As I wrote in the forum, it still remains to be determined which ones of Dieste's works in Uruguay are going to be included in the nomination, but two of them are certain: Cristo Obrero church in Estacion Atlantida and San Pedro church in Durazno. During my last visit to Uruguay I visited the first of the two which is situated about 50 km away from Montevideo and quite close to Atlantida, which is a busy summer resort. The church is not at the resort itself but in a small, poor neighbourhood constructed around the railway station some 5 km inland. The church is situated right where you enter this neighbourhood and is easy to overlook. Despite its unusual shape, its small size, earthen colours and proximity to other buildings make it difficult to spot
