World Heritage Sites connected to 'Moved from location of original construction':

  • Arles The Roman obelisk was originally erected in the 4th century in the center of the "spina" of the circus of Arles. After the Roman era, it was abandonned and fell down or was toppled and broke into two parts. Louis XIV had it placed at its present position in front of the town hall.
  • Armenian Monastic Ensembles "The Chapel of Dzordzor is in fact the remains of a much larger monastic ensemble, which disappeared at the start of the 17th century. Its vestiges were moved and reerected because of the construction of a dam. The dismantling of the ruins of the chapel and its reconstruction were carried out in 1987-1988"
  • Nubian Monuments The Abu Simbel temples and those at Philae relocated to Agilika Island.
  • Paris, Banks of the Seine Obelisk in Place de la Concorde came from Luxor where its twin still "resides". The Tombs of the Kings (Jerusalem) previously housed a number of sarcophagus; they were moved to the Louvre by the French government, who inherited the site after the death of the previous French owner, who had herself purchased the land in 1874.
  • Split Sphinxes at the Diocletian Palace originate in Egypt
  • Statue of Liberty Originally erected temporarily in Paris before being shipped to NYC
