World Heritage Sites connected to 'Mosque':

  • Agra Fort Mina Masjid (Heavenly Mosque), Pearl Mosque, Nagina Masjid (Gem Mosque)
  • Al Qal'a of Beni Hammad Great Mosque, origins in 11th century, its minaret can be seen as the prototype for three-tiered minarets like the Giralda in Seville (although this also is attributed to the Koutoubia Mosque of Marrakech)
  • Ancient ksour of Ouadane, Chinguetti, Tichitt and Oualata Chinguetti, the Great, "Friday Mosque" - created by the city founders sometime in the thirteenth or fourteenth century. The minaret of this ancient structure is supposed to be the second oldest in continuous use anywhere in the Muslim world. At Ouadane are the remains of and old mosque, and a new one closely modelled upon it.
  • Ancient Merv Several, including the mosque-mausoleum complex of Sultan Sanjar and the 12th century Seljuk Talkhattan Baba Mosque
  • Bagerhat Mosque of Shait Gumbad (or Sixty Dome Mosque) and several others - 15th century - Sunni

  • Derbent ‘Djuma-mesjid’ is one of the earliest mosques in the former USSR. It probably dates from the 8th century, though renovated or rebuilt in the 14th and 17th centuries.

  • Djenné Great Mosque (made of mud) - originating from 1300, rebuilt in 1907/9 - Sunni

  • Shakhrisyabz Kok Gumbaz Mosque: A Friday mosque built in 1437 by Ulugh Beg in honor of his father Shah Rukh, its name meaning “Blue Dome”.
