Buildings of historic or architectural interest designed and still operating as hotels. The building must be noteworthy enough for a visit on its own.

  • Levuka The historic Royal Hotel dates to about 1860 but was rebuilt in 1917 after a fire destroyed the original building.
  • Medina of Marrakesh Hotel La Mamounia. Famous for its guests (inc Churchill/Roosevelt whilst at Casablanca) and art deco/moorish designs from 1922.
  • Melaka and George Town Georgetown: Eastern & Oriental Hotel, one of the most famous hotels during colonial time in Asia
  • Qu├ębec "The Chateau Frontenac was one of a series of "chateau" style hotels built for the Canadian Pacific Railway company at the end of the 19th and the start of the 20th century. The railway company sought to encourage luxury tourism and bring wealthy travelers to its trains." (wiki)
  • Venice and its Lagoon Grand Hotel des Bains, Lido. The actual location where Thomas Mann "got the inspiration" for his novella "Death in Venice" and actually used as the main location in the movie (and as Shepheards in Cairo in "The English Patient"). A significant Palladian/Art Nouveau building from 1900.
  • Vienna Hotel Sacher (Wiki: "It is famous for the speciality of the house, the Sachertorte chocolate cake. There is also an art gallery in the hotel with works from the 19th century. The hotel is built where Antonio Vivaldi once lived.")
  • Waterton Glacier International Peace Park Prince of Wales Hotel (1927), one of Canada's grand railway hotels
  • Yellowstone Old Faithful Inn - The structure is the largest log hotel in the world; possibly even the largest log building in the world. The Inn, which was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1987. (wiki)
