Tassili n'Ajjer

The Tassili n'Ajjer is a mountain range in the Sahara desert in southeast Algeria. Much of the range, including the cypresses and archaeological sites, is protected in a National park, Biosphere Reserve and World Heritage Site. The range is also noted for its prehistoric rock paintings and other ancient archaeological sites, dating from neolithic times when the local climate was much moister, with savannah rather than desert.

"I visited December 2001 and was surprised to find many of the fascinating and unique rock-paintings in a very bad state, suffering from natural incrustations, wind erosion and vandalised by visitors writing their names across the paintings. There is a litter problem near campsites. Litter boxes (stone circles) built by the Park authorities were not cleared except once a year by tour operators. Local authorities and the operators do not cooperate."
