Profile Clyde

I always had a passion for historical, cultural and natural heritage sites around the world. The UNESCO world heritage list contains not only the most iconic heritage sites but also other outstanding sites which I surely wouldn't have visited were it not for their inscription. Some of these off the beaten track sites are indeed my favourite.

Khor Dubai (T) Clyde

I visited this tentative WHS in January 2015. Khor Dubai or Dubai Creek is a natural seawater inlet of the Arabian Gulf located in the heart of Dubai.

It is 14 km long and varies from 100 to 500 m wide and ends at the Ras Al-Khor wildlife sanctuary (photo). The creek divides the city into two parts, namely Bur Dubai and Deira, and has played a major role in the economic development of the region throughout history.

Les grandes villes d'eaux d'Europe (T) Clyde

I visited this tentative WHS in March 2017. When I used to live in Belgium, I always visited Spa for automotive reasons rather then for its historic value.

If you visit or live in any of the Benelux countries (especially Belgium), you'll most probably drink Spa bottled water as it is one of the most popular brands. The word spa, meaning natural water source believed to possess special health-giving properties seems to have originated from this village.

Island of Asinara (T) Clyde

I visited this tentative WHS in March 2017. I had already seen the island and the outstanding gulf of Asinara from the pristine La Pelosa Beach near Stintino (north-western tip of Sardinia) and that is the most photogenic way of capturing Asinara's beauty.

Asinara is a 52 square kilometre uninhabited island and a wildlife and nature reserve as well as a national park. It is home to a population of 'wild' Albino donkeys.

Su Nuraxi di Barumini Clyde

I visited this WHS in March 2017. Having visited most of the 'beehive' sites on the list and knowing that the cost of this visit would be quite steep at 11 euros per person, I had low expectations.

Upon arriving at the Su Nuraxi parking lot, just outside the village of Barumini, I immediately spotted the highest nuragic structure and what seemed like circular structures which are quite similar to the ones of Choirokoitia in Cyprus.

Sanchi Clyde

I visited this WHS in November 2016. It is an hour away from Bhopal and two hours away from Bhimbetka.

The Great Stupa is the oldest stone structure in India and the main highlight of this stupa as well as of Stupa 3 are the elaborately carved toranas or ornamental gateways.

They are truly of OUV and almost in pristine condition. There are also other minor remains of pillars, temples and unfinished stupas as well as an informative museum down hill from the stupas so allow at least 3 hours to visit thoroughly.
