Profile Wojciech Fedoruk

Travelling is my biggest passion. I try to spend every day of my vacation time (unfortunately, limited to 26 days a year) travelling. I travel mostly with my family and sometimes solo. I love going to remote places and always plan visiting as many WH sites as possible. Although sometimes they are not rewarding, in most cases visiting WHS gives me much better understanding of the region I visit.

I find this site very helpful in planning my trips to more difficult WHS and want to share my reviews especially on rarely visited ones.

Gadara (Modern Um Qeis or Qays) (T) Wojciech Fedoruk

Umm Qays is located on the top of the mountain with a view of many historical regions – Jordan Valley and West Bank, See of Galilee, Golan Heights and Syria. In a good weather even Mount Hermon and Nazareth is visible from here. Its unique location made it a pilgrimage place for Palestinians that had to escape to Jordan after Six-Day War – from here they could look at most of their lost homeland.

Qasr Al-Mushatta (T) Wojciech Fedoruk

The site is located very close to the Ammann airport, so for visitors renting a car there (very recommended for Jordan) it may be the first spot. The site is not very popular, so there are few tourists, no fee and no guards or other personnel. Qasr Al-Mushatta is a quite well preserved ruin of Umayyad palace from 8th century. It served as a khalif's palace and from what remained one may realize that it was really magnificent.

Arab Eclecticism - Foundation and evolution of an Architectural School in the city of As-Salt (1860-1925) (T) Wojciech Fedoruk

Nowadays As-Salt is nothing more but a satellite city of Amman agglomeration. But until the First World War it was a serious rival of current Jordanian capital. It faced substantial growth particularly in the end of XIXth century, when many wealthy families from the land now called West Bank moved to As-Salt. During this time a Palestinian architect Abdel-Rahman Aqruq formed a new style calle „Arab eclecticism”.

Um el-Jimal (City) (T) Wojciech Fedoruk

Umm el-Jimal are the ruins of Nabataean, Roman and early Byzantine town from the beginning of our era. It is located in one hour driving distance from one of the biggest Jordanian tourist attractions – Jerash. Although Syrian border is only 10 km away, access to the site is not limited or especially checked (which is the case of Umm Qays, another TWHS close to the Syrian border, where everybody has to be checked on the military checkpoint).

Shaubak Castle (Montreal) (T) Wojciech Fedoruk

If you have some free time after visiting Petra, going to Shaubak castle may be a good idea. The castle is located about 30 km from Petra and is easily reachable by car in 30 minutes. Shaubak Castle is one of the best preserved crusader castle in the Middle East and, as many other crusader fortresses, has a picturesque location on top of the mountain. The external wall is well preserved and even inside there is a lot to see.
