Padova Urbs Picta. Giotto, the Scrovegni Chapel and the 14th century painting cycles hubert

There is broad agreement among the reviewers on this website that the Scrovegni Chapel deserves a place on the World Heritage List and I can only emphasize once again the magnificence of these paintings. The Scrovegni Chapel was on the Italian tentative list as a single monument since the late 1990s, but it was never nominated. Recent activities suggest that things now get going: in January 2016, the T-list entry has been extended to include eight additional sites with frescoes from the 14th century, and it was reported that Padua is working on the nomination dossier and a management plan.

Botanical Garden, Padua hubert

Certainly, the Orto Botanico is not a highlight among the World Heritage sites in Italy and even in Padua, the site is by far less popular with visitors than the famous Scrovegni Chapel or the Basilica of Saint Anthony.

I had visited the garden for the first time in 2004 and re-visited it on a weekend trip in August 2016. The memories of my first visit were not particularly good, at that time large parts of the garden were not well-kept and many plant beds were empty.

Antequera Dolmens Site hubert

My interest for megalithic sites was aroused during a visit to Carnac in 2015, so the inscription of the Antequera Dolmens in 2016 was perfect timing to include the site in the itinerary for our Andalusia trip in September. The Antequera Dolmens WHS comprises five sites at four locations: three dolmens and two natural landmarks closely linked to the megalithic monuments.

The Dolmen de Viera and the Dolmen de Menga are located just outside Antequera on a small hill overlooking olive groves and with the view to the Pena de los Enamorados, one of the natural sites of this WHS.

Gorham's Cave Complex hubert

When we planned our trip to Andalusia, the question was whether it would be worthwhile to include Gorham’s Cave in our itinerary. The caves are not accessible for individual visitors and at that time there was no information on guided tours to the cave on the websites of Visit Gibraltar or the Gibraltar museum. In early June, I wrote an email to the Gibraltar Museum, but never got a response. But now there seems to be guided tours into Gorham’s Cave for a limited number of visitors (see >> Read on

Paris, Banks of the Seine Hubert Scharnagl

Paris, the No. 1 on the list of most visited WHS on this website and truly a wonderful city. And it is one of those WHS that I have visited most frequently. At the end of the 1990s and early 2000s, I had an annual scientific meeting in Paris in late March, a perfect opportunity to extend a business meeting to a long weekend trip. Moreover, I visited Paris twice on private trips, most recently in September 2015 at the end of our tour to northern France.
