Welcome to the 4th World Heritage Site newsletter

This edition covers November and December 2004, and marks the end of another year in the website’s history (almost 8 years now).

More visited sites
The highlight for me of another year visiting WHS has been
Bulgaria’s Rila Monastery (http://www.worldheritagesite.org/sites/rilamonastery.html). A great location, wonderful frescoes, an original colour scheme: just perfect. Of course I will continue in 2005, starting off with the second and third stage of my tour of Southern Italy and with a trip to Krakow already planned for the end of February.

In the last weeks of 2004 I added visits to Bremen, Pompei, Naples and Caserta to my personal list. Both Pompei (http://www.worldheritagesite.org/sites/pompei.html) and Naples (http://www.worldheritagesite.org/sites/naples.html) I rank very high on their uniqueness.

New on the website

At the Community page (http://www.worldheritagesite.org/community.php), Sheila Ross from Canada presented herself. She already sent in some reviews with pics of WHS in the Southwest USA, for example Mesa Verde (http://www.worldheritagesite.org/sites/mesaverde.html).

Further, I’ve restyled the picture galleries on the website, so there’s room for more pictures of special places.

WHS in the news

Not exactly in the news, but in recent books. In “The best American Travel Writing 2004”, I came across a story by Patrick Symmes, titled “The Kabul Express”. He recently managed to visit both Afghan WHS, and reports on these monuments.  A more in-depth account of one those, the Minaret of Jam (http://www.worldheritagesite.org/sites/minaretofjam.html), can be found in another recent publication: “The places in between” by Rory Stewart (recommended).

Also in “The best American Travel Writing 2004”, “Innocents abroad” is inspired by the Würzburg Residence and Tiepolo’s famous paintings of the continents (http://www.worldheritagesite.org/sites/wurzburgresidence.html).

That´s it for this edition
