Let’s start 2007 with a roundup. Which sites are rumoured to be the new WHS for 2007? Which WHS are in the news?

Rumours:

From June 23 – July 2, the World Heritage Committee will be meeting in Christchurch (New Zealand) to discuss new entries to the List. A focus on the Pacific is expected. Read more about it on the organizing committee’s website: http://www.conference.co.nz/index.cfm/31whc.

Experiences over the last years have learned that it’s very hard to predict what will be included, but some rumours are already about on the internet:

Visitor reviews

679 of the 830 WHS have been covered now by visitors of the website.  Still blank are accessible sites like Sucre and Tiwanaku (both Bolivia) and the Greek island op Patmos. So if you´ve been there, please add your contribution to the website.

First reviews were made of:

Sewell Mining Town (Chile), “….The site itself is truely remarkable, a complete early XX cent. town (with church, casino, cinema, hospital and residential houses) located on slopes of rocky mountain - some 2.200 m above sea level. ”

Sacri Monti of Piedmont and Lombardy (Italy), “….I liked very much the Sacro Monte because of its originality and of the monumentality and decorations of buildings that normally have much smaller dimensions (the chapels as isolated buildings). It is worth of visit if you are in Lombardy and justifies its inscription on the WHS, but I think that with the nine Italian Sacri Monti could be inscribed also the two in southern Switzerland (of Locarno and Brissago).”

Ksar of Aït-Ben-Haddou (Morocco), “…The front parts of the village are well restored, as this has been the setting of many films, from Lawrence of Arabia through to Gladiator. It has also been a testing ground for UNESCO and ICOMOS in preservation techniques. Therefore the first part of the town looks very impressive almost new, the higher up the hill you climb however the less restoration you see and this gives a good feel for what the site would be like with out the investment. It is quiet a nice climb up to the top (picture) but be prepared for a fair bit of rough ground, there is defiantly no paving here.”

Belovezhskaya Pushcha / Bialowieza Forest, “Bialowieza is a place for total relaxation, hiking, bird-watching or whatever you feel like being close to Mother Nature. Getting to this remote corner of Europe is not an easy one. But it is extremely rewarding when the sun is shining on a beautiful, warm summer day on a forest that once covered most of the European continent.”

New visited sites

My personal score has reached 226 after a visit to Bangladesh, Thailand and Cambodja in December/January.

Most impressive of course was the visit to Angkor. “Angkor possibly is one of the WHS that attracts the most visitors. The nearby town of Siem Reap is packed with hotels and other amenities for every budget. And still it's not enough, cause a lot of construction is going on to create even more of this. I stayed there for 5 days, and made 4 separate visits to Angkor. I had bought a 3 day pass (for 40 US dollar), but I easily could have stayed longer cause there's so much to see. In all I took over 300 pictures, a personal record of one site. The good thing about Angkor is that it's very diverse. So the 7th temple still is interesting.”
