The openness of ThinkHeritage has ended (unfortunately)!

We regret to inform all readers that following the official request of UNESCO this report of the 35th Session of the World Heritage Committee has to come to an end. Since the Committee meets in private session, the reports provided were considered to contradict the principle of confidentiality. All readers interested in the forthcoming decisions of the World Heritage Committee are encouraged to follow @UNESCOnow and @UNESCOheritage on twitter.

Solivagant:
The Outstanding Universal Value of the Historic City of Cesky Krumlov is negatively impacted by the construction of a revolving theatre in the castle's historic gardens.

Seems very odd to me, looks like a very minor issue to be discussing at a once yearly world forum. No mention is made of it in the evaluation or the last periodic report from 2006. Perhaps they are going to build a new one, though there is no indication of that on the website.
I've walked through that park and don't remember seeing the theatre. I just noticed though that you can walk through the park on Google Streetview. So you can have a look for yourself. Admittedly the gantry on top looks a little unwieldy up close, but it is mostly obscured by trees and looks like any other coffee shop in an historic garden.
Probably best to make an example of this site though, or else you will end up with giant casino/ hotels being chucked up in the middle of historic centres on the WHL.

Perhaps extending it with Phimai and Phanom Rung.

I think it is already in Thailand's tentative list

That is a shame, though I guess not unexpected. Isn't pretty much all of this information going to come out in the reports at the end of the conference? (or am I just too naive, I didn't really read anything that I wouldn't expect to come out in a slightly more sanitised version after the event.)

Perhaps the new inscriptions were causing problems if it highlighted reversal of ICOMOS' recommendations

I think the reports, even though short, showed too much of the discussion. Some of the anger at Tanzania, for not telling them earlier about not to build the road through Serengeti etc.

Apparently the Cesky Krumlow Theate issue has been rumbling on since the 2005 WHC
"3. Endorses the opinion of the State Party of Czech Republic to remove the revolving theatre from its present location within the Castle gardens and recommends to involve garden archaeologists for such removal, and rehabilitate the garden area affected as well as the Bellaria Summerhouse in accordance with the conservation standards outlined in the draft conceptual plan;
4. Further recommends the State Party to ensure that the design of the revolving theatre and its setting at the new location within the buffer zone of the property are in harmony with the historic environment;"

Hello, fellow world heritage enthusiasts!

It's unfortunate that ThinkHeritage was asked to stop providing updates; instead we turn to Twitter - which is (sadly) blocked here in China.

I hope it won't be much, but I would appreciate it if you can also post the same Twitter updates here so I (and perhaps all others in PRC) can follow.

Thanks. Xie xie!

I fear you will find the Twitter updates of little use compared with what we were previously getting - a comparison of the "official" report of what happened regarding Tanzania and the Serengeti provides a classic example of what happens when media reporting gets controlled by a bureaucracy -but I guess, bojboj, we don't have to tell you that unfortunately!!

China has withdrawn its nomination of Wudalianchi according to this report. It looks more like some philosophical treatise on knowing when to let go than anything else. But I really could not bring myself to read it carefully. So could some kind soul who read Chinese have a go at it and see if there is anything of real interest in there please?

Actually the automated translation has a wonderful "Confucius he say......." atmosphere to it!!!!

"Acted timely retreat is a philosophical principle"

"Exit is not terrible, for fear that can not afford to blow, and malaise, the courage to struggle for self-transcendence of self."

"The responsible person's heart is kind of suffering, to bear much of the torture, require much courage to make a choice. Difficult to pay the inscription near the edge of a step by step, and now suddenly have to give up, which would like to quit? But a little calm reflection, may feel Wudalianchi, really there needs to be perfected."

Priceless!!

The announcement of West Lake's inclusion probably also means that Pearling (Bahrain) and Bridgetown (Barbados) indeed did not get in.
