Brescia (December 2013)

Blessed with unusually warm and sunny weather for mid-December, I had a very succesful trip looking out for (T)WHS around Brescia in northern Italy. These aren't unmissable sites per se, but the reward in just 3 days of driving around in the Italian Alps was high. Highlights: the world class Sta. Giulia museum in Brescia & finally getting a grip on the enigmatic Pile Dwellings.

Northwest Italy (February 2013)

Although I've travelled to Italy for numerous times, the northwest has always been overlooked. It is not served by direct flights from Holland, and the region does have a more industrial focus than the rest of the country. I made up for that with a 4-day trip, flying into Milan and back from Genoa (via Paris). I travelled around by train and found Turin covered in snow, but the mediterranean feel of Genoa and Cinque Terre won me over.

Tivoli & Spoleto (September 2012)

The last of my summer weekends in Europe I spent in Central Italy. I stayed for two nights in the town of Tivoli near Rome, host to no less than two WHS. Both are classics since the times of the Grand Tour. And from there I drove north into Umbria in search for the remains of the enigmatic Longobards ("long beards").
