So What is This About?

This small island off the coast of Southern India has a violent ring to it. Unfortunately, the current political situation overshadows the long and glorious past of this strategic point in the Indian Ocean.

For such a small country, the number and quality of the designated Worldheritages is remarkable. They span Sri Lanka's (or Ceylon's) history from 380 BC to the Portuguese and Dutch colonial era's.

My trip in 1996 to Sri Lanka was a 3-week tour around the country. There were a lot of cultural highlights (Sigiriya!), and I also enjoyed the nature on the Horton Plains and in Bundala Park. Good memories, but you were always aware of the shadows: a bombed bankbuilding in Colombo, the desperate people in the tourist industry who welcomed too few visitors.
