Wojciech Fedoruk Profile

Travelling is my biggest passion. I try to spend every day of my vacation time (unfortunately, limited to 26 days a year) travelling. I travel mostly with my family and sometimes solo. I love going to remote places and always plan visiting as many WH sites as possible. Although sometimes they are not rewarding, in most cases visiting WHS gives me much better understanding of the region I visit.

I find this site very helpful in planning my trips to more difficult WHS and want to share my reviews especially on rarely visited ones.

Bulwarked Fortifications of the "Raia" (Border) (T) Wojciech Fedoruk

Bulwarked Fortifications of the "Raia" (Border) (T) by Wojciech Fedoruk

This site contains four fortified places on the Spanish-Portuguese border. Most of them were built in XVIth century or after. Out of four location of this proposal, one is already on the main list (Elvas), so if the whole proposal is inscribed in this shape, for most it would be an easy tick. We managed to visit another one – stronghold of Almeida and it was one of our biggest surprises in this marvellous country.

Ensemble of Alvaro Siza's Architecture Works in Portugal (T) Wojciech Fedoruk

Ensemble of Alvaro Siza's Architecture Works in Portugal (T) by Wojciech Fedoruk

Driving the most popular motorway Lisbon-Porto we made a quick detour to see the university campus in Aveiro, especially its library building, placed on Portuguese T-List. The library, according to the description of the proposal, is one of the best examples of Alvaro Siza's architectural style. I am not familiar with modern architecture and I have not heard about Alvaro Siza before, but I liked the library building and the whole campus. In style and atmosphere it is so different from (not so distant) University of Coimbra but if I was a student again, I might consider these two places equally. I am not aware how many buildings of the Aveiro University have been designed by (or in cooperation with) Alvaro Siza, but the library building is similar in style to all other edifices of the campus.

Roman Production Centre of Fish Salting and Conservation in Tróia (T) Wojciech Fedoruk

Roman Production Centre of Fish Salting and Conservation in Tróia (T) by Wojciech Fedoruk

The site is located at the top of Tróia Peninsula and can be reached either by land (around 20-30 km detour from highway Lisbon - Faro) or by ferry from Setubal – ferry terminal is quite near the site, although taking a taxi might be necessary.

The site is a complex of ruins built at the beginning of 1st century AD and occupied until 6th century. It served mainly as a fish-salting production complex but it had many accompanying buildings, such as baths, mausoleum or cemetery.

Gadara (Modern Um Qeis or Qays) (T) Wojciech Fedoruk

Gadara (Modern Um Qeis or Qays) (T) by Wojciech Fedoruk

Umm Qays is located on the top of the mountain with a view of many historical regions – Jordan Valley and West Bank, See of Galilee, Golan Heights and Syria. In a good weather even Mount Hermon and Nazareth is visible from here. Its unique location made it a pilgrimage place for Palestinians that had to escape to Jordan after Six-Day War – from here they could look at most of their lost homeland. As Umm Qays is very close to the border with Syria, even tourists have to pass through military checkpoint (one of few where they really examine foreign passports).

Qasr Al-Mushatta (T) Wojciech Fedoruk

Qasr Al-Mushatta (T) by Wojciech Fedoruk

The site is located very close to the Ammann airport, so for visitors renting a car there (very recommended for Jordan) it may be the first spot. The site is not very popular, so there are few tourists, no fee and no guards or other personnel. Qasr Al-Mushatta is a quite well preserved ruin of Umayyad palace from 8th century. It served as a khalif's palace and from what remained one may realize that it was really magnificent. Main construction of the palace survived, but nothing but naked walls remains inside. Beautiful facade of the palace was mostly disassembled and moved to Berlin, where it can be admired in famous Pergamon Museum.

Qasr Al-Mushatta is an easy site that can be visited very quickly. Definitly worth a detour.
