Mount Carmel Caves Stanislaw Warwas

Mount Carmel Caves by Stanislaw Warwas

Visited September 2017

For those who have no background of prehistory, these caves can be disappointing. Well, not even caves, because only one of four (Nahal) can be called a cave; the three are rather shelters or holes in the natural cliff façade (the ceilings, first floors of the karst caves collapsed thousand years ago and paradoxically saved remains of our ancestors’ culture). But if you are able to stimulate your imagination and go far back half a million years ago… And if there’s a guide who can explain what you’re looking at… The outstanding value of this site becomes clear and unquestionable. This is the most exiting journey through human (pre)history you can experience, although not many traces are left.

Historic Monuments and Sites of Ancient Quanzhou (Zayton) (T) Stanislaw Warwas

Historic Monuments and Sites of Ancient Quanzhou (Zayton) (T) by Stanislaw Warwas

Visited June 2017

Quanzhou is located in Fujian province, on the southeast coast of China, around 100 km NE from Xiamen. It was a very important port and starting point of the Chinese maritime silk road during Middle Ages. From its Arabic name, Zaytoun, the English/French name of satin (sateen) was derived, because this fabric was originally made of silk.

The history of city is shaped by its maritime trading connections and activities. A long time ago its historical heart was located closer to the sea; now port facilities are far from the city center.

Lushan National Park Stanislaw Warwas

Lushan National Park by Stanislaw Warwas

Visited June 2017. Lushan National Park is located in the northern part of Jiangxi province and can be easily reached from the city of Jiujiang; there are many buses and minibuses from the long-distance bus station, at least one every hour till 6 pm. (Jiujiang is also a good starting point for the trip to Poyang Lake/Nature Reserve, on Chinese tentative list, already deferred at the beginning of ’80, and re-submitted in 1996.) The entry fee for the park is 180Y – you have to pay it while still in the bus, at the main gate to the park. The bust stop is located in Gulingzhen village, where there are also many places where you can spend a night or two (we slept in one of these old villas and recommend choosing a villa instead of hotels), shops and restaurants. By the bus station you’ll see a huge tourist information centre with a very big UNSESCO sign above the entrance and… no one speaking English, French or any other language but Chinese.

Al Zubarah Stanislaw Warwas

Al Zubarah by Stanislaw Warwas

Visited June 2017.

To get to Al Zubarah Fort and the visitors center you can take bus 100 from Doha Al Ghanim bus station; the first one leaves at 9:30 am and it takes 2 hours to get there. There’s not any admission fee and all you can see is the fort itself, the small but informative exposition and the adjacent Qal’at Murair Archaeological site. One hour is enough to see all that and catch a return bus at 12:30.

If you want to see the remains of al Zubarah city at the seashore, you have to prearrange the visit for the next day at the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha or at Tourist Information at the airport.

Do not expect anything spectacular!
