Chaîne des Puys et faille de Limagne (T) Caspar Dechmann

I visited the Chaîne des Puys during a trip along the enchanting Dordogne. We drove up the highest peak of the chain, the Puy de Dôme. From there you have a fabulous view over the whole chain that is quite impressive. There are dozens of vulcanos of different shapes: domes, maars and cones like the wonderful Puy Pariou. They are not very tall volcanic formations but I have never seen so many in such a small area.

The timeless, humanistic architecture of Jože Plecnik in Ljubljana and Prague (T) Caspar Dechmann

I often wonder how there can be so many tentative sites in the middle of Europe without a review on this website despite the fact that they are easy to reach or even near another WHS. Therefore I grasped the occasion when I was in Prague for a few days and made the excursion to see the Curch of the most sacred heart of our Lord by Slovenian architect Jože Plecnik. I had even read that the Czechs had considered to nominate this church for the tentative list by itself. I didn't expect too much from the photographs I had seen before but my visit left me with a similar impression. The church has a certain individuality but it didn't strike me neither by its beauty nor by its originality. The plain cubelike interior has a rather prosaic feel to it as many churches from the 20 century with a similar special concept.

Strasbourg Caspar Dechmann

Strasbourg by Caspar Dechmann

I visited Strasbourg a couple of weeks ago during my holidays in the Alsace. As always when I visit a UNESCO site I tried to figure out the exact parts forming the inscription. In Strasbourg that is quite easy: it is the Grande Île surrounded by the two arms of the river Ill . It is supposed to form the old city dating from the 15th to the 18th century. On the map this seems a very elegant and convincing solution. But while the area around the magnificent cathedral and along the southern shore of the island refers well to this description you have two walk just a few blocks north to find a mix from very different periods including buildings on the 19th and 20th century. Among them many modern buildings with no historical connection or asthetic value.

Luis Barragán House and Studio Caspar Dechmann

I visited this house during my one day in Mexico City flying home from Yucatán. The required reservation over the website did not work, therefore I just went there and was lucky to get a spot in a tour if though in Spanish.

Campeche Caspar Dechmann

The walls of Campeche are nice but not complete and Not all original. I cannot imagine that there were not several similar or even more impressive even in the new world. For European standards they are modest. I either don't know enough to say if the colourful houses of the old city are unique and if there OUV is justified. However, to wander through the streets is a delight. Many houses are nicely renovated and the streets are full of shops, bars, restaurants and galleries. When you enter you see that the rooms are often beautifully and simply renovated. High ceilings with parallel how you can still find it in the buildings of Barragán and other modern architects. In some places the rooms extend in long sequences far into the building, sometimes combined with courtyards and fountains.
